Breakfast included: Alcafar Vell, Menorca

Rustic, chic and little-known, the Alcaufar Vell boutique hotel is a quiet and sophisticated spot on the Balearic's most unspoilt island.

Breakfast is taken in the Arabic-style courtyard in the shadow of the hotel's stunning facade. The
plants offer atmosphere and a haven for the crickets that provide the Mediterranean sound effects.

The selection offers the flour-dusted local ensaimadas, a pastry of concenrtic rings, plus mini chocolate croissants and pretty pots of yoghurt and coulis.

The melt-in-the-mouth Spanish ham was divine, on torn-off chunks of fresh bread and local hard cheese.

Coffee from the machine was disappointing, but the surroundings more than made up for it.
