Best breakfasts: Aldo's, Santa Cruz, California

Brunch, in the sunshine, on the water, California style... you can't beat Aldo's. You have to book for a weekend brunch spot because this family-run harbour restaurant is so popular.

Like so much of the cuisine of California, there's a strong Mexican influence, which makes for a killer huevos rancheros and the breakfast wrap, above. The spinach-based wrap is stuffed with eggs, spinach, avocado, bacon, salsa and cheese ($11.50).

The signature brunch dish is eggs benedict (from $10.50), which comes in classic ham version or with bacon, tomato and avocado, shrimp, crab, smoked salmon or florentine. The French toast too is legendary ($7.95), washed down with bottomless coffee and an audience of sealions and sea otters in the harbour below.
